Taking a Closer Look at Strategies for Effective Online Teaching
From this week’s resources, it’s essential for instructors to create an environment that is successful for every learner. Dr. Palloff and Dr. Pratt discuss the important steps an instructor can use in order to implement instruction online that can create productive and successful learners. They focused on the instructor’s role and student’s role in regards to the online format. This week, you and your colleagues will engage in a discussion about the different strategies instructors should use when developing and designing instruction. Effective teaching strategies in online environments are very similar to in class strategies. The instructor needs to be present from the beginning of the course, provide clear expectations and strategies that engage students (Laureate Education Inc., n.d.).
ReplyDeleteThe challenges that and ID or an instructor may face could be related to technology; for example, some students may not have access to broad band network or to a certain software. Therefore, they should plan for options and alternatives which could result in an increase of resources, planning time and cost.
To ensure effective communication and delivery of instruction to online learner, instructors need to include strategies the enhance students to students, students to the instructor and student to content interactions (Dashaw & Lee, 2011).
To overcome challenges of developing, administering, and designing instruction online effectively, instructors need to plan ahead and prepare an organized syllabus for the online course. The syllabus works as a road map for students and will keep them informed with expectations, objectives and desired outcomes. Moreover, instructors could provide students with options for communication tools and assignments to choose from, and provide rubrics with criteria that could help students in achieving higher performance levels. Effective teaching practices are a necessity in all teaching environments and all levels of teaching. While pursuing our education to become teachers or instructors we “learn” many strategies that can be used within the classroom. I italicize learn because we really do not know them until we are able to utilize them in an effective manner. Throughout the IDT course at Walden we have learned to utilize those strategies and more as discussed by Palloff and Pratt (Laureate Education, 2010) in role playing, case studies, and the use of Blogs. Responding to students postings involves recognition of their work and providing a follow up question. This has always been an informative area for me, when the instructor asks a question that increases my level of thinking and I have to frequently research further to answer.
This week’s lesson was one in which I have learned the importance of reading the directions thoroughly. Overcoming the challenges of developing, administering and designing instruction had proven to be more difficult than I had anticipated because I was not adequately prepared for the lesson. Preparation is the number one strategy I have learned this week.
